A bud about to burst forth is attractive in its temporal exclusivity; it’s something to gather around and witness collectively. On the evenings of June 8 and 9, 2012, I will show the pink-white, pineapple-scented blossom of the giant water lily Victoria amazonica in a municipal botanical house in Skälby gård in northern Kalmar. The giant water lily is one of several plant species from a distant land whose public blooming in Sweden has become exotic fertility rites in miniature.

In a Western context, the tropical figures as something foreign, encumbered with both desire and anxiety. Sensations of adventure, passion, temptation, titillating threats, and especially a promise of something else are aroused. In the same way as the Orient, the Tropics function as a projection screen for the exotic dreams of the West – fantasies that say more about those who entertain them than the places they are projected on.

En knopp på väg att slå ut lockar med sin temporära exklusivitet, den blir något att samlas kring och kollektivt bevittna. Kvällarna den 8 och 9 juni 2012 visar jag jättenäckrosen Victoria amazonica rosa-vita och ananasdoftande blomning i ett kommunalt tropikhus på Skälby gård i norra Kalmar. Jättenäckrosen är en av flera växtarter med fjärran hemvist vars publika blomningar i Sverige blir till exotiska fruktbarhetsriter i det lilla.

I en västerländsk kontext figurerar det tropiska som någonting främmande, behäftat med både lust och oro. Förnimmelser av äventyr, hetta, lockelse, kittlande hot och inte minst ett löfte om någonting annat väcks. På liknande sätt som Orienten, fungerar Tropikerna som en projektionsyta för västerlandets exotiska drömmar – fantasier som säger mer om de som hyser dem än platserna de projiceras på.
