Konstfack - Degree Exhibition 2012 / Vårutställning 2012

Åsa Agerstam

It is time for the students to speak, to speak with their work. Degree projects reflect so many things. Mostly they reflect the student, and his or her talent, ambition, skills. At the same time these works are an image of what our Department of Interior Architecture and Furniture Design stands for. We have been focusing more and more on the basic cornerstones of our profession, Space, Furniture, Color and Light. ( Rum, möbel, färg och ljus ) At the same time this is a reflection of the needs of today’s society and culture. It is time to focus. We are educating people in the field of Interior Architecture and Furniture Design. That is the responsibility we have to take.

This year we are extremely proud to present the work of our Master students. They come from eight different countries – a luxury we will lose with the new rules on tuition fees. Dialog, critical thinking, questioning, have played an important role. And at the same time dreams and ideas have been carried through to reality. We have encouraged the  students to dare to undertake the large-scale, to work outside and inside, with space and furniture. The field in which we can work in our program is widening as society and culture changes.

The students present a whole variety of projects. Some have their roots in fundamental, philosophical questions, our existence, healing. Inspiration has been found in time, darkness and light, the Japanese tearoom and its concept of space, emptiness. Projects also tell to us  that we should not forget the value of play, or that we should open our eyes and be critical of our own surroundings here at Konstfack. Forgotten places have been lifted up. One of the projects has its home in Argentina and tango. And all these projects display their physical existence here at the degree exhibition. The path from these first initial thoughts and dreams to something that you can touch, perhaps sit on, view, enter into or use, marks the journey the students have taken with us in the last two years.

Some of the projects deal with space, creating space, a courtyard, larger indoor public venues. The fact that space is experienced with all of our senses is strongly present in these works. The human body is the starting point for all dimensions, as we can see in the bath project. To complete this variety of different projects, we also present furniture  and a project which even probes behind the origin of a piece of furniture and function. And ideas as well on how to make a journey with new quality.

This year we wanted to display on a large scale, if possible full-size, with pride. We want to show these works straightforwardly, open up a discussion. We are happy and proud to send these talented students out into the world, for the lifelong process of learning more.
